Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage is
an orphanage, nursery and captive breeding ground for wild Asian elephants
located at Pinnawala village, 13 km northwest of Kegalle town and about 90Km
from Colombo towards Kandy, Sri Lanka.
It was established in 1975 by the Department of Wildlife Conservation on a 25-acre (10 ha) coconut plantation on the Maha Oya river.
Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage is one of a famous project in the world which has taken care over 80 (with baby elephants) injured, rescued or abused wild Asian elephants.
